U12s do County proud

2010-05-25 23:24 by Ian

The Wexford under 12 squad took part in the annual Cremmins Cup competition in sunny Tipperary over the weekend. They reached the semi-final stage of the competition having topped their group with impressive victories over Kilkenny and South Tipperary and a draw with WWEC.
In the semi-final, Wexford lost 2-1 to Kildare. Kildare deservedly led 1-0 at the break as they took the game to Wexford for the majority of the first half. However the last five minutes of the first period Wexford put the Kildare side under a lot of pressure and Kildare’s keeper did exceptionally well to deny Aaron Maddock an equaliser from a powerful header right on half time. In the second half, Wexford continued to press Kildare with some very impressive attacking football. Aaron Maddock, Paul Murphy and Paul Brennan were all denied opportunities with the Kildare keeper on top form and some last ditch defending. With eight minutes left, Wexford went 2-0 with Kildare catching Wexford on the counter. But Wexford continued to fight on and with three minutes left they finally broke through when Padge Doyle headed home from a corner.
Wexford went for the juggler for the remainder of the game with six players playing upfront fighting for the equaliser. It almost paid off with Daniel Brennan, Robert Coakley and Aaron Maddock all coming close, but Kildare scrambled for everything and managed to hang in there for the win as Wexford finished strong. The game was a great advertisement for football with Wexford and Kildare playing some excellent football throughout a very competitive game played with in the right spirit. Kildare would progress to the final and beat Waterford 2-0 with another good performance. Wexford went on and defeated WWEC 5-1 in the third/fourth place play-off.
