Battling U14s lose out to Cork in Plate final
Wexford's under-14s showed that they could be a match for the best as they lit up Limerick University with some top-class football to top Group 2 of the 32-league competition and qualify for the quarter-finals of the Kennedy Cup.
And this was after a disastrous start in the four-team group when losing 4-1 to Clare in Monday evening’s opening game.
Sean Fitzpatrick was Wexford’s scorer on that occasion and he was the hat-trick hero when his team accounted for Wicklow on a 4-0 scoreline on Tuesday morning, with Eoin Whelan also scoring.
Limerick Desmond had beaten Wicklow 3-0 on Monday and Clare had drawn 1-1 with Limerick on Tuesday morning.
Wexford went into Tuesday afternoon’s game against Limerick Desmond knowing that they had to win and hope that Wicklow would get a result against Clare.
Both games kicked off at the same time and the big Wexford support were not alone cheering their team to a 4-0 victory, but were also urging Wicklow on to a surprise 4-1 win against Clare.Sean Fitzpatrick picked up the Player of the Day award as he again found the back of the net, while Eoin Whelan (2) and Sam Norval also scored against Limerick as Wexford rocketed to the top of the group and qualified for the Kennedy Cup last-eight.
Cavan/Monaghan was Wednesday’s opposition in the Kennedy Cup quarter-final game and it wasn’t Wexford’s day as they lost out on a 1-0 scoreline despite having several scoring opportunities.
The Slaneysiders were then in action in Thursday’s Plate semi-final and scored a fine 2-0 victory against Dundalk with Sam Norval and Eoin Whelan the goal scorers.
That win set up a Plate final meeting with Cork on Friday and a very good Leeside team took the trophy on a 3-1 scoreline with Wexford battling hard and their goal was scored by Nikodem Czernik.
Their performances over the week in Limerick earned Wexford sixth position in the competition and manager Alan Kelly and his coaches are thanked for their outstanding dedication and work with the squad over the past four years.

·  DDSL WON THE Kennedy Cup for the 32nd time when beating Kildare 4-2 in Friday afternoon’s final in Limerick.

·  Shamrock Rovers’ Sean Fitzpatrick has been selected to attend a 2004 development match v St. Patrick’s Athletic on Saturday, June 23rd in FAI Headquarters, National Sports Campus, Abbotstown.

·  A reminder that the Wexford Schoolboys League AGM will be held on Thursday, 21st June in The Horse and Hound, Ballinaboola, commencing at 8pm. Failure to attend will result in a fine.
